180sx: Greddy Sump
Trying an Greddy sump this time since I’ve only used aeroflow as an aftermarket one the last 7 years.
I’m not exactly sure what was leaking I think it was the ps hoses which dripped down the motor and made a mess of everything else. Stock sump has had a nice smack too lol.
Undid the 10mm bolts and hammered in a gasket scraper. Much neater compared to when I first changed a sump for the first time using a hammer to smack off the old one which flung oil everywhere.
So it turned out my car already had a s14/15 style oil pickup. Not sure if blacktop/type x have these from factory since they crossover to s14 production or if one of the previous owners upgraded since the sump looked like it had been revealed at some point.
Anyways not necessary but I quickly chased out the existing threads which cleaned up some swarf and silicone.
I found a razor blade is the quickest and neatest way to clean up the old silicone. Can follow up with some green scotch before wiping down with brake cleaner too.
Pulled the windage tray off to mop up extra oil that’s pooled in the upper sump so it didn’t keep dripping down while trying to seal the new sump.
Used Permatex Ultra Black which is “maximum oil resistance” though Ultra Grey RTV is the standard if you already have it or only want to have one tube of RTV for most things.
And we’re on. Hoping the bash plate I have will protect it…
Translation of the provided instructions. Ideally should torque it to spec but I forgot to buy a long m5 Allen socket. Roughly did it tight with a T handle though I most definitely went over 7.5nm.
Maybe because I’ve resealed sumps way too many times this felt like a super quick install. Also if you’re thinking of getting this sump you’ll need to reuse your stock drain plug otherwise any m12x1.25 plug will work. Greddy offer a magnetic one themselves if you want to stay consistent brand wise.
I got a s14/15 oil pickup too which has a bigger opening and extra support bracket vs s13.

Be careful to not over tighten the sump plug especially if you’re reusing the stock steel one.
Also don’t forget to refill the oil after 24h of curing!
