AE86 pt2: Engine removal and tear down

So shortly after getting the AE86 back I had a bit of an accident and broke my hand which slightly threw a spanner in the works as I needed to get the engine out and pulled down.

Adam was nice enough to come over and lend me a hand. The engine was pretty straightforward to pull from the car which is always a relief.

Definitely would've struggled to get this out and on the stand with only one hand.

The car was sold to me with a suspected spun bottom end. When we drove the car off the trailer there was no knocking and when we drained the oil there were no particles so we were hopeful it might be something simpler.

Flipping the motor and popping off the sump confirmed that yep it was indeed bottom end bearing failure along with sludge from years of neglect by whoever owned the corolla that this smallport came out of before it got fitted to this car.

Crank for the bin. Bearings toast. At least it died while Perry was having fun on track.

Luckily the crank journals were still good.

The head was full of sludge too. Use quality oil and change it regularly people!

Saw a handy tip somewhere to put hose on the end of rod bolts to help avoid damaging other stuff on the way out.

Bores showed quite a bit of wear. I wonder how many kms this motor has done.

I highly recommend getting the valve spring removal tool that's essentially a big lever clamp as it would've saved me a lot of time with disassembling the head.

Parts were starting to rock up. I got some MRP Ladder Caps though this was probably unnecessary.

TRD Head Gasket. Cusco mounts though I ended up breaking one of the engine mounts so don't rattle gun them with a big ass gun like I did lol.

OEM +.5mm Pistons, MRP Rods and new OEM crank as it was cheaper and better than attempting to get the original one repaired. I used TP Piston rings too as NPR were out of stock at the time.

I was still one handed so Josh was nice enough to come and help me bring everything to the machine shop.

Dario at Engine Solutions Victoria was lovely to deal with and super knowledgeable. I just checked on google and it looks like he's retired now so I wish him all the best with his retirement.

That's it for part 2 hopefully I hurry up and write the rest.

Thanks for reading!
